Eleanor Raymond was, notably, an early adopter of modern architectural principles. However, she did not only build modern homes, but worked with different architectural styles depending on the location and the needs of her clients. Her use of both modern and historical architectural practices, as well as her concern for the relation of space to both the inhabitants and the surrounding environment, still have relevance for architects and designers working today as we confront these issues on a global scale.

Justin Kedl is an artist and scholar living in Beverly, Massachusetts. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in sculpture and design from Gordon College, as well as a Master of Arts in modern and contemporary art history, theory, and criticism from Azusa Pacific University. His interest in twentieth-century modernism—particularly Surrealism, the Bauhaus school, and Abstract Expressionism—informs both his scholarship and the creation of his own artwork. He currently works for Historic New England’s Gropius House and a local pottery studio.
