Mid-Century to Next Century: Modern Houses and Sustainable Futures Opening Reception

You are cordially invited to the opening reception of the joint exhibit of FoMA and CFREE at the Lincoln Public Library Art Gallery, Monday, March 30, 2026, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Refreshments will be served and members of FoMA and CFREE will be present to talk about how to make your home, from any century, more sustainable.

The reception and exhibit are free, and all are welcome.

Mid-Century to Next Century: Modern Houses and Sustainable Futures explores Lincoln’s commitment to creating a sustainable future for Lincoln’s rich collection of Modern houses. Featuring large-format photographs by local photographers, smaller-scale photographs of homeowners’ choices to make their houses more sustainable, and narrative panels documenting the architectural history of the houses and the homeowners’ decision-making about how to make their houses more energy efficient, the exhibit highlights how five of Lincoln’s Modern houses—pioneering in their time—are meeting the present-day challenges of climate change. As part of the renovations, homeowners, architects, and builders worked closely together to ensure that the original signature features of the Modern houses were maintained through the process.

The exhibit is a joint initiative of the Friends of Modern Architecture/Lincoln (FoMA) and CFREE (Carbon Free Residential, Everything Electric). The exhibit will run from March 30 to April 30, 2026, during Library hours.

FoMA is a Lincoln-based non-profit dedicated to preserving, documenting, and educating about Lincoln’s Modern architectural heritage. Lincoln features over 300 extant Modern municipal and residential buildings constructed between 1937 and the mid-1970s. Their modest scale and subservience to the natural environment contributes greatly to the current appearance of the town. FoMA is a resource for homeowners who would like to discuss plans to renovate their houses.

CFREE is a working group of Lincoln Green Energy Committee, helping residents affordably achieve energy-efficient, comfortable, and healthy fossil fuel-free homes, through educational and supportive services: Green Coaches, Getting to Zero series, Five-Year Plans, Case Studies, Climate Minutes, CFREE tips, workshops, and tabling events.
